If you thought New Year’s Eve is the best day to check in at a fancy hotel you should think again. While hotels advertise glitzy deals on New Year’s Eve and most have grand parties, this is no time for a quiet getaway.

Why is it not advisable to spend New Year’s Eve at a hotel?
New Year’s Eve is a special day for most of us. However’ this is also true of hotels. Most Hotels host a grand New Year’s Eve Party and get very busy preparing the grand do.

What are the hassles of staying at a hotel on New Year’s Eve?
The hotel is competing with other hotels in having a wonderful New Year Bash. This means that the staff will be distracted and diverted from their regular duties. Calling housekeeping will meet with no response. Room service if any will be delayed or denied as the case may be. Hotel brochure promises of doctor on call or business centers will meet with no attention.

Will Hotel amenities work in New Year’s Eve?
Many hotels close their restaurants and swimming pools on New Years Eve while concentrating on the party.

What if I want a good night’s sleep?
New Year’s Eve is not the day for a good night’s sleep at a hotel. The noise of the party will permeate the atmosphere. If you are lucky, you may get a room away from the madding crowd. The drinking and dancing will go on till the New Year is rung in and beyond. In the morning, the staff is not likely to be at their most attentive and the hotel will be clearing up party debris.

Can I find out in advance and book a room in a quieter part of the hotel?
Most hotels are commercials enterprises and will not necessarily keep their promises. At best, you can ask your travel agent to get a written assurance from hotels of giving you a quiet room.

The bottom line is that hotels charge you more for spending New Year’s Eve and gives you less.

What are the typical problems experienced by passengers in transit between flights?
With the airline business becoming extremely competitive in a fast paced world, a transit passenger faces extremely crowded airports and consequently long queues at customs and transit check points with a lurking fear of missing the connecting flight.

Does a short duration transit passenger suffer?
A short duration passenger gets away lightly but airline scheduling is such that only a rare lucky passenger is likely to have a short duration wait.

What attractions do airports offer for transit passengers?
Airport conveniences differ from airport to airport. Heathrow airport in London and Changi in Singapore offer a variety of shopping options for the transit passenger. Airports like the International airports in Malaysia and Schiphol in Amsterdam arrange short duration visas and the transit passengers with enough time on hand can take a short trip round the city. There are many other airports like Franfurt and the Indira Gandhi Airport in New Delhi that have no other attraction than one duty free shop. Some countries have a reputation of unfriendly and angry airport staff; some international airports have no food or drinks.

When you choose your airline, can you check out your best deal in transit?
All airports have internal portals. You can check out the features they offer on the web. However, bear in mind that your flight can be late and if you plan booking a stopover trip and check if you have at least a minimum of ten hours or a whole day depending on the length of the stopover.
